Vulcania, Theme park and volcanological museum in Saint-Ours, France.

Vulcania is a theme park and volcanological museum in Saint-Ours, France, combining scientific exhibits with interactive experiences to demonstrate geological phenomena and volcanic activities. The site includes several underground areas, projection rooms, and outdoor zones built into the hills of Auvergne.

The center was established in 2002 by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing to promote understanding of volcanic processes and Earth sciences. Since then, it has renewed its exhibitions several times to present new insights about the planet and natural forces.

The park uses lava rock and local materials in its interior design, allowing visitors to touch the rough surface of volcanic formations during their tour. Many exhibits rely on simulations and films that recreate earthquakes or eruptions, offering a direct experience of geological processes.

The facility opens from March to November, with each main attraction taking between 15 and 30 minutes and the full experience lasting about half a day. The site sits on hilly terrain with some inclines, so comfortable shoes are advisable.

Part of the facility consists of a crater built into the ground, so you descend rather than enter buildings. This design creates a sense of truly diving into geology as you move through corridors and halls.

Amusement parks in France

French amusement parks combine entertainment, education, and culture. Located outside major cities, these parks offer themed experiences that set them apart from traditional amusement parks. They focus on specific topics such as science, history, or French cultural heritage, attracting families and school groups year-round. Vulcania in Auvergne explains volcanism through interactive exhibits in a dormant volcanic landscape. Puy du Fou in Vendée presents France's history with theatrical shows featuring over a thousand actors. Le Parc du Petit Prince in Alsace offers attractions inspired by Saint-Exupéry's literary work. France Miniature near Paris displays over a hundred scaled replicas of French monuments at 1:30 scale. Futuroscope in Poitiers uses projection and simulation technologies to create audiovisual experiences. These parks combine leisure activities, regional identity, and educational objectives.
