Chopine and Gouttes puys, Twin volcanic peaks in Puy-de-Dôme, France
Chopine and Gouttes Puys are two connected volcanic peaks in the Auvergne region reaching about 1180 meters high. Both cones are composed of trachyte, a light-colored volcanic rock that gives the landscape its distinctive appearance.
These volcanic cones formed millions of years ago during intense geological activity in the region. They are part of a chain of volcanoes in the Auvergne that shaped the landscape over extended periods.
Scientists and geologists regularly conduct research at these peaks to study volcanic phenomena and contribute to understanding regional geological formations.
A marked hiking trail with blue blazes guides visitors over both peaks and takes about 2 hours to complete. The terrain is fairly exposed, so weatherproof clothing and sturdy footwear are advisable.
The two peaks are joined by a ridge that lets hikers move continuously between both crater structures in a single walk. This connecting feature sets them apart from other volcanoes in the region.
