Lac de la Maix, Glacial lake in the Vosges Mountains, France.

This natural glacial lake sits at 678 meters elevation in the dense forests of the Vosges massif, covering approximately 1.6 hectares with a maximum depth reaching 45 meters and crystal-clear waters fed by underground springs.

The site features ruins of an ancient chapel built in 1508 on a crypt containing a Merovingian sarcophagus, while underwater archaeological excavations have revealed Gallo-Roman materials including a monoxyle pirogue dating between 780 and 985 BC.

Local folklore tells the legend of the Devil Violinist who lured villagers with his music before divine catastrophe struck, while the site remains associated with pilgrimages to the Virgin Mary and ancient druidic worship practices.

The lake is accessible via marked hiking trails from Vexaincourt village or Col de Prayé, swimming is prohibited to preserve the site's tranquility, and pets are welcome on the premises for nature walks.

Archaeological discoveries include an underwater tumulus and ancient lake dwelling structures, while modern visitors report mysterious violin music echoing across the waters during certain nights, perpetuating centuries-old supernatural beliefs.
