Thiepval Memorial, War memorial in Somme, France
The Thiepval Memorial rises 45 meters high with brick piers faced in Portland stone, featuring interlocking arches and a central east-west aligned structure.
Inaugurated in 1932, this memorial commemorates 72,337 British and South African soldiers who lost their lives during the Somme battles between 1915 and 1918.
The names of fallen soldiers, including seven Victoria Cross recipients, are inscribed on the memorial piers, representing their service and sacrifice in World War I.
Visitors can access historical information about the Somme battles at the Reception and Interpretation Centre before exploring the memorial grounds.
The memorial contains both British and French military cemeteries, making it the largest Commonwealth war memorial for missing soldiers in the world.
