Château d'Esparron-de-Verdon

The Chateau d'Esparron-de-Verdon is a castle perched on a rocky outcrop in this Provencal village with a square tower and thick walls. The building combines medieval and later wings that together show different architectural periods.

The castle was first mentioned in 990 and came under the control of the Castellane family in the 13th century. Extensive renovations between 1520 and 1540 significantly changed its appearance and structure.

The castle shows how communities in this region lived together within fortified settlements during the Middle Ages. This building style shaped Provence by creating places where protection and shared life went hand in hand.

The building features a broad stone spiral staircase that connects multiple wings and shows how thoughtfully the medieval layout was planned. A specialized tower known as the latrine tower reveals details about private aspects of medieval life.
