Lac d'Esparron, Artificial reservoir in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Lac d'Esparron is an artificial reservoir created by damming the Verdon River and stretches across several kilometers of landscape. The water appears turquoise between steep limestone cliffs, surrounded by pine and oak forests, with many small coves along the shoreline.
The reservoir was created through dam construction in the 20th century as part of an irrigation and energy project for surrounding communities. This structure permanently changed the landscape and water management of the entire region.
The lake brings together people from surrounding villages who come to swim, boat, and spend time outdoors. It is a place where locals and visitors naturally gather to enjoy leisure activities together.
The shoreline is easily accessible at several points with parking areas and rental stations distributed along the road. The best months to visit are from May to September when weather is dry and the water is warm enough for swimming.
The water level can shift by several meters depending on the season as the reservoir is regularly filled and emptied for irrigation and power generation. This constant rhythm shapes how the lake appears and feels during a visit.
