Serrabone Priory, Romanesque priory in Boule-d'Amont, France.
Serrabone Priory is a Romanesque monastery situated at 600 meters elevation in the Pyrénées-Orientales, surrounded by oak forests in the Aspres mountain range. The sanctuary comprises stone structures with characteristic rounded arches and a remarkable carved pulpit.
The monastery was founded around 1001 and became an Augustinian priory in 1082 under the rule of the Count of Conflent. This transformation shaped its religious role for centuries to come.
The marble pulpit from the 12th century displays intricate carvings of animals and plants that reflect medieval sculptural craftsmanship. Visitors can study these carved details and appreciate the artistic skill of craftsmen working during that era.
Access is via mountain roads requiring travel through rural terrain with some steep pathways. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow extra time for the climb, especially during poor weather.
The walls blend local schist with pink marble from Conflent, creating a distinctive pattern visible on the exterior of the complex. This combination is uncommon at other religious buildings in the region and makes the structure instantly recognizable.
