Dolmen du Coll de la Llosa

Dolmen du Coll de la Llosa, Neolithic dolmen at Saint-Michel-de-Llotes and Bouleternère, France

The Dolmen du Coll de la Llosa is a stone burial chamber with a trapezoidal interior space that transitions into a passage about 2.50 meters long and 50 centimeters wide. The structure lies covered beneath a circular mound of earth and stone.

This megalithic monument originated in the fourth millennium BCE during the Neolithic period. It functioned as a communal burial ground for the earliest inhabitants of the region.

The capstone displays numerous cup marks and crosses carved into its surface, revealing how ancient communities expressed their beliefs and rituals. These engravings show the spiritual importance people attached to this burial place.

The dolmen sits on a forested slope and requires hiking along unmarked forest trails from the nearest road. Wear sturdy footwear and allow time to navigate the natural terrain carefully.

This monument sits at the boundary where three communes meet: Saint-Michel-de-Llotes, Bouleternère, and Casefabre. The location overlooks the valley of the Boulès river, revealing why ancient people chose this strategic and visible spot for their burial ground.
