Château de La Gallée, Historic castle in Millery, France
Château de La Gallée is a fortified residence with a square layout and three corner pavilions topped by hipped roofs, crowned by a central belvedere tower. Round towers with flat roofs frame the entrance courtyard, and terraced gardens extend along the southern side of the property.
The estate originated in the 13th century when the Gali family established their residence, which gave rise to the present name La Gallée. Over subsequent centuries, the structure evolved and was refined into the form visitors see today.
The interior features large wall paintings depicting mythological figures that reflect artistic traditions of French Renaissance design. These decorative elements are typical of aristocratic residences from this period and remain a defining visual element of the rooms.
The property remains private and can only be viewed from the exterior, so visitors can walk around the outside of the building to observe its features. The southern approach offers the best view of the building and its gardens, making this the most rewarding vantage point.
The building retains its original name derived directly from the founding family, underscoring its historical continuity over nearly nine centuries. This is uncommon for French estates, which often underwent renaming or lost their historical nomenclature.
