Mont Lassois, Celtic fortification site near Châtillon-sur-Seine, France

Mont Lassois consists of two plateaus, with the higher plateau rising 100 meters above the Seine Valley, featuring the Saint-Marcel church at its summit.

The hill fort controlled tin trade routes from Great Britain to Italy during the late Hallstatt period, governed by a female aristocracy in the 6th century BC.

Archaeological excavations have revealed over 2 million pottery fragments and numerous Celtic artifacts, indicating strong connections with Mediterranean civilizations through trade networks.

The site spans 2.7 kilometers around the mountain, protected by a 5-meter deep ditch and substantial earthwork fortifications with carefully constructed stone walls.

The discovery of a princely tomb in 1953 contained a dismantled wagon, bronze crater, and jewelry, demonstrating the advanced metallurgy of Celtic aristocracy.
