Château Marmont, Medieval castle in Châtillon-sur-Seine, France
Château Marmont is a neo-classical castle at the western edge of Châtillon-sur-Seine in Burgundy. It stands on grounds that were originally fortified in the 15th century, positioned along the northeastern bank of the RD 965 road near the Seine river.
The castle developed from a fortified site built in the 15th century and later became associated with Marshal Marmont. During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, Prussian forces set fire to it during their withdrawal, though one wing was rebuilt afterwards.
The castle takes its name from Marshal Marmont, its most famous owner whose family lived here for generations. The name remains a local reminder of the Napoleonic era that shaped this region.
The castle is privately owned and not open to public visits, as it has been the residence of the Maitre family since 1824. You can see the building from the nearby RD 965 road when passing through the area.
The location played a key role early in World War One when General Joffre coordinated the First Battle of the Marne from here. This made the castle a quiet witness to a pivotal moment in European history.
