Co-Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption, Saint-Pierre

The Co-Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption is a church building featuring baroque style with two side towers and a prominent bell tower at the center. The interior contains multiple altars and colored windows depicting religious imagery throughout the space.

The building was first constructed in 1654 as a private chapel and suffered damage from British bombardment in 1667. Following the Mount Pelée eruption in 1902, it was rebuilt into the structure that stands today.

The cathedral displays Caribbean Catholic artistic traditions through its altars and stained glass windows featuring biblical scenes and local saints. These artistic choices reflect how the community expresses its faith in this region.

The location is open daily to visitors and regular services take place throughout the week. You can visit at any time to walk through and observe the architectural details and interior spaces.

During the post-1902 reconstruction, rocks from the volcanic eruption were salvaged and incorporated into the rebuilt walls. These stones from the natural disaster became an integral part of the structure we see today.
