Château d'Anet, Renaissance château in Anet, France
The Château d'Anet is a Renaissance castle featuring three distinct courtyards with a central courtyard of honor as its focal point. The structure blends Gothic and French Renaissance elements throughout its design.
King Henry II commissioned architect Philibert de l'Orme to build this castle between 1547 and 1552. It was created as a residence for Diane de Poitiers, an influential figure at the French court.
The exterior displays two statues of Diana the Huntress by Jean Goujon and a bronze relief by Benvenuto Cellini above the main entrance. These artworks show how French and Italian craftsmanship came together.
The château sits less than 70 kilometers from Paris in the Eure-et-Loir department and displays furnished rooms to visitors throughout the year. Allow time to explore both the interior rooms and the garden grounds surrounding it.
The château holds one of France's first Italian-inspired parterre gardens, designed by Jacques Mollet. This garden style later influenced how royal French gardens were created.
