Château de Meauce, Medieval fortress in Saincaize-Meauce, France.

Château de Meauce is a medieval fortress built on a feudal mound near Saincaize-Meauce, commanding views over the Allier River valley. Its walls reach more than three meters thick in places and feature defensive structures typical of its era.

The lords of Meauce first appear in records from the 11th century, with architectural remains dating to the early 12th century. The structure evolved from a simple fortified mound into a symbol of local power across the Middle Ages.

The castle's name reflects the noble family that once ruled this area and shaped its identity. Visitors can still see how the fortifications reveal the structure of power that defined medieval life here.

After decades of neglect, the castle underwent major restoration and is now open to visitors. The site sits within a protected natural area where walking is the best way to explore the surroundings.

The castle has an unusual circular layout that follows the shape of its original feudal mound. This design adaptation is less common than the angular floor plans seen in other fortifications from the same period.
