Sentier du Ver-Vert
The Sentier du Ver-Vert is a walking path along the Loire River in Nevers that extends roughly three kilometers. It runs from the railway bridge to where the Allier River meets the Loire, following the right bank throughout its course.
The path was developed in the 1990s through a joint project between Nevers and Marzy municipalities. It replaced an earlier towpath that once served river transport and navigation along the Loire.
The name Ver-Vert refers to a famous parrot character from Jean-Baptiste Louis Gresset's 1735 poem, which remains part of Nevers' local identity. This literary connection gives the path a cultural layer that locals and visitors alike recognize and appreciate.
The path offers good access with several parking areas distributed along the route for visitor convenience. Walking here is easiest during dry weather, and the trail suits visitors of all fitness levels.
Sheep graze along the path under the care of a shepherd and dog, managed as part of a Natura 2000 conservation agreement. This unusual approach to maintaining the landscape creates an interesting blend of agriculture and nature preservation on the walk.
