Barroux Castle

Barroux Castle is a stone fortress that sits on a hill between Carpentras and Vaison-la-Romaine, offering views of Mont Ventoux and the Vaucluse mountains. The building displays typical medieval features with a chapel inside, and a distillery continues to operate within its walls, carrying on local production traditions.

The castle was built in the 12th century to protect the area against attacks, and later underwent major reconstruction work. A fire destroyed parts of the building in 1944, but the structure was preserved and later restored.

The chapel inside displays wall paintings from the 18th century that reflect religious themes and artistic expressions of the region. These artworks tell of the spiritual importance of this place to the people who lived and prayed here.

Visitors can tour the castle on guided walks that also explore the distillery within the walls. It is worth checking ahead for visiting days, as opening times vary throughout the year.

The Vayson de Pradenne family has owned the castle since 1929 and still runs a distillery inside using traditional methods. This operation produces liqueurs and other products that are rarely found elsewhere in the region.
