Larrun, Mountain summit in Basque Country, France
The sandstone mountain Larrun rises 905 meters above sea level at the western end of the Pyrenees mountain range between France and Spain.
French military forces used Larrun's summit as a defensive position during the Peninsular War until Wellington's troops captured it in November 1813.
Ancient stone circles and dolmens scattered across Larrun's slopes demonstrate the mountain's significance in Basque mythology and prehistoric traditions.
The Petit train de la Rhune rack railway provides transportation to the summit from the French side, offering an alternative to hiking trails.
Local shepherds continue their centuries-old practice of grazing Manech sheep, Pottok ponies, and cattle on the mountain's grassy slopes.
