Église Saint-Martin de Sare, Church building in Sare, France.
Église Saint-Martin de Sare is a church situated on a hilltop in the center of Sare with a five-story tower and three levels of carved oak galleries. The interior can accommodate up to 700 people and is defined by the elaborate woodwork throughout.
The church first appears in historical records in 1142 in the Golden Book of Bayonne Cathedral and received major elevation work in 1641 under priest Pedro de Axular. These changes shaped the structure visitors see today.
The wooden galleries inside display traditional Basque craftsmanship with turned balusters and careful details. Visitors can see how these woodwork elements shape the space and reflect the skilled traditions of this region.
The building is accessible year-round with free admission, allowing visitors to wander freely through the interior. Guides are available in French and Basque if you want to learn more about the details.
A sundial on the outside bears an inscription about the passage of time, reminding visitors of life's transient nature. The bell tower contains a bell installed in 2005 with its own sculptural features.
