Pont-canal sur la Baïse, Navigable aqueduct in Vianne, France
The Pont-canal sur la Baïse is a stone aqueduct that carries boats over the Baïse River as part of the Garonne lateral canal system. The structure spans about 61 meters and allows watercraft to cross the river instead of detouring around it.
The structure was built between 1839 and 1853 under the direction of engineers Jean-Baptiste de Baudre and Jean Gratien de Job, who used local stone blocks from the Quercy region during construction. It formed part of a larger plan to expand the Garonne canal system with innovative water transport solutions.
The aqueduct features decorative elements including lion-faced guardrails and cobblestone walkways, representing French engineering excellence of the 19th century.
The walkway across the top of the aqueduct is accessible on foot to visitors and offers views over the river and surrounding area. The best time to visit is during summer when the weather is stable and the canal is actively used.
The aqueduct is part of a network of water structures that allowed canals to pass over rivers instead of being interrupted by them. A similar structure exists in nearby Agen and demonstrates the engineering approach of that era.
