Château de Montmelas

Château de Montmelas is a medieval castle and winery in Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin, France. A distinctive cylindrical keep overlooks a squared fortified enclosure with defensive walls, surrounding a main courtyard and wooded grounds.

The site was first recorded in 977 as a fortress of the Sires de Beaujeu. Later ownership changed hands in the 16th century, marking a new chapter in its military role.

The estate is known today for wine production that coexists with its medieval past. You can see how the old buildings and grounds blend with contemporary vineyard practices.

You can tour the castle during scheduled visits, which often include wine tastings of the estate's production. Overnight accommodation is available for guests who wish to stay longer on the grounds.

Sections of the original walls display a distinctive fishbone stone pattern from the 12th century. This ancient masonry technique reveals how medieval builders reinforced the fortification's structure.
