Château de Bionnay, Medieval castle in Lacenas, France
Château de Bionnay is a castle built from the 18th through 19th century featuring a U-shaped layout with a central structure and two wings that frame a central courtyard. The grounds include several hectares of gardens arranged in French style with areas dedicated to roses and other plantings.
The castle was built over the 18th and 19th centuries under the Marzé family, who were its first recorded lords. A significant transformation occurred in the late 1990s when restoration work took place and the property was converted into an arts center.
The castle now functions as a working artist residence where contemporary creators exhibit and develop their projects throughout the year. Visitors can observe this active artistic practice directly within the rooms and grounds.
The gardens are accessible to visitors and arranged across different areas that are best explored on foot to fully experience all the plantings. Wear comfortable shoes as ground conditions vary with the season and weather.
The castle houses Les Editions de Bionnay, a publishing house focused on artist books and publications connected to the creative work produced on site. This link between artistic creation and publishing is rare, offering visitors a chance to see both happening in one place.
