Château de l'Anglais

The Château de l'Anglais is a castle on the rocky slopes of Mont Boron in Nice, featuring three towers and a central structure with Gothic architectural elements. The building has been divided into residential apartments since 1927 and occupies a prominent location overlooking the city.

Robert Smith, a British military engineer with experience in India, started building this residence in 1856 and took three years to complete it. The structure was built during the era when wealthy Europeans settled along the French Riviera.

The building displays Victorian architecture mixed with Eastern influences, showing styles that became popular when the French Riviera developed in the 1800s. You can see this blend in the decorative details that remain visible on the structure today.

The castle is located at 176 Boulevard Carnot and 29 Avenue Jean Lorrain on Mont Boron and can be reached on foot through hiking paths. Since the building now contains private apartments, you can view the exterior from the surrounding area, but the interior is not open to visitors.

The original circular salon could hold around 500 guests and was connected to gardens that extended down to the Mediterranean coast. This generous entertainment space shows the luxurious way of life that wealthy British residents favored during the Belle Epoque period.
