Abbaye Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Benedictine abbey on Mont Andaon, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, France

Abbaye Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon is a Benedictine abbey situated on Mont Andaon and enclosed within fortified walls. Within these walls lie terraced gardens planted with Mediterranean vegetation and ancient olive trees that complement the religious buildings.

The monastery was founded in 982 as a sacred site next to Saint Casarie's tomb and quickly grew into a powerful institution. By the 13th century it controlled hundreds of churches and priories spread across the Provence region.

The abbey church holds vaulted rooms with murals by Emile Bernard and hosts concerts, exhibitions, and workshops throughout the year. These events bring cultural activity to the site beyond its religious role.

The site is best explored on warm days when the gardens feel most welcoming and plant life is thriving. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the pathways navigate terraces with some steep sections.

From the terraces visitors enjoy panoramic views of Avignon's Papal Palace, Mont Ventoux, and the Luberon mountains in the distance. This location makes it an excellent vantage point for understanding the wider landscape of the region.
