St Florent Abbey

St. Florent Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Saumur featuring structures that extend along the Loire, blending Romanesque architecture with Gothic elements. The preserved church entrance dates from the 12th century and displays the skilled craftsmanship of medieval builders.

The monastery was relocated to its current location in 1025 after the original settlement lost control of Saumur castle to the Angevins. The new abbey church was consecrated in 1041, marking the beginning of a fresh phase of religious life at this site.
