Château de Chassy

Château de Chassy is a castle in Montreuillon with four round towers and one square tower, its facades marked by large windows and triangular pediment dormers in the attic space. The structure dates from 1649 and combines medieval foundations with the classical French style of that period.

The castle was rebuilt in 1649 on the site of an earlier fortress by Jacques I de Choiseul and his wife Madeleine de Malain. This reconstruction marked the transformation from a medieval stronghold to a classical castle.

The chapel inside shows features that are older than the rebuilding in the 17th century, reflecting how architecture evolved in French castles. You can notice these differences in the details as you walk through the space.

The location is best approached by exploring the surroundings beforehand, as it sits in a rural area with limited transport links. Plan your visit to allow enough time for exploring the outdoor grounds and interior spaces.

The grounds still preserve the moats of the original medieval fortress hidden beneath the later castle. Below the structures sits a vaulted room from the medieval stronghold period that offers visitors a glimpse into the earlier history.
