Gouffre Berger, Pit cave system in Engins, France

The Gouffre Berger consists of eleven entrances leading to limestone passages extending 45,000 meters through the Vercors Plateau of the French Alps.

The cave system was discovered in 1953 by Joseph Berger and his team, maintaining its status as the deepest known cave until 1964.

The cave network attracts international speleologists and researchers who document its geological formations and conduct scientific studies throughout the year.

Access to the cave requires advanced caving skills, proper equipment, and consideration of water levels, as sudden flooding poses significant risks.

The connection with Scialet de la Fromagère in 1990 extended the cave system to a depth of 1,271 meters beneath the surface.
