Calais Lighthouse, Historical lighthouse in Calais, France

Description

Calais Lighthouse is an octagonal brick tower standing in the French port city. The structure rises above the waterfront and continues to guide maritime traffic along the Channel.

History

The lighthouse began operations in 1848 to aid navigation at this major European port. Since then it has guided ships safely through this busy shipping route.

Culture

The structure received recognition as a classified historical monument in April 2011, cementing its status in France's maritime heritage preservation.

Practical

Visitors can climb the interior stairs to experience the view from above and learn about how it operates. The ascent is steep, so wearing comfortable shoes and allowing sufficient time is helpful.

The lighthouse produces a distinctive signal pattern of four flashes every fifteen seconds, guiding ships across a range of 23.5 nautical miles.
