The Arsenal des Galères extends along the waterfront, featuring a distinctive L-shaped structure that defined the boundaries of the Quai des Belges and Rive-Neuve.
Constructed between 1665 and 1669 under Colbert's direction during Louis XIV's reign, this naval facility served as the base for the French Mediterranean galley fleet.
The arsenal housed thousands of convicts who were sentenced to forced labor, rowing the galleys as part of their punishment until the practice ended in 1748.
The former headquarters building of the arsenal stands on Cours Honoré d'Estienne d'Orves and currently functions as a budget hotel.
The facility maintained up to forty galleys at its peak in 1690, representing the last major naval complex dedicated to this ancient form of warfare.
