Pamiers Cathedral, Catholic cathedral in Pamiers, France
Pamiers Cathedral is a religious building in southern Gothic style with a single nave and side chapels tucked between the buttresses. The walls display the distinctive reddish brick typical of the Toulouse region.
The cathedral was founded in 1295 by Pope Boniface VIII when the diocese of Pamiers was established. In the 16th century it suffered major damage during religious conflicts and was later substantially restored.
The cathedral holds significant religious records from the medieval period, including documentation of inquisition procedures under Bishop Jacques Fournier in 1318.
The building is located in central Pamiers and remains an active place of worship with regular services. Visitors can explore the interior during daytime hours while respecting the times when services are taking place.
The main interior spaces underwent significant renovation in the late 1600s, overseen by two prominent architects of the period who gave the space a unified classical design. This extensive reworking shaped how the cathedral appears today.
