Caves des Mousseaux, Underground historical shelter in Dénezé-sous-Doué, France.

Caves des Mousseaux is an underground shelter in Dénezé-sous-Doué featuring over 300 carved figures spread across multiple chambers in varying conditions of preservation. The soft tuffeau stone walls hold a wide range of sculptural work created at different times.

The caves were created during the second half of the 16th century and lay forgotten until 1956 when ethnologists rediscovered them. This rediscovery brought to light an important artistic work that had been hidden from the world for centuries.

The carved figures show scenes of daily life, religious imagery, and political satire that reveal what mattered to the people who created them. They tell stories of work, faith, and how those in power were seen through the eyes of common people.

Access to the caves is not currently possible as restoration work has been ongoing since 2019 to address damage caused by saltpeter, fungi, and algae affecting the delicate limestone carvings. Check current conditions before planning a visit.

Each sculpture displays a naive style with disproportionate bodies and expressive faces carved directly into the walls. This distinctive artistic voice created a remarkable record of how ordinary people saw their world during the Renaissance.
