Chapel of Saint-Probace

This Romanesque chapel stands on the Candoux hill, offering views over the Caramy valley and the surrounding countryside with its thick stone walls and red tile roof.

The chapel was rebuilt in 1643 on the site of an earlier structure, with remains of a Celtic-Ligurian oppidum nearby indicating ancient occupation of this strategic hilltop location.

The chapel is dedicated to Saint Probace, a first-century evangelist who is venerated locally and traditionally invoked for rain during periods of drought in the region.

The chapel is accessible only on foot from a parking area near the Caramy river, and hosts pilgrimages on Easter Monday and August 25 each year.

A hermit currently resides at the site, maintaining the chapel and its grounds as part of the restoration work undertaken by a small monastic community since 2008.
