Château de Châteaubourg, Medieval castle in Châteaubourg, France.

The Château de Châteaubourg is a fortress sitting on a rocky elevation that overlooks the right bank of the Rhône River. Located about ten kilometers north of Valence, it now operates as a hotel called Hostellerie de Châteaubourg, offering accommodation to guests.

The fortress appears in 12th-century documents under Lord Rogier II of Clérieux, who hosted King Louis IX during the crusades. This royal connection made the site an important point in the regional medieval power structure.

The structure shows medieval defensive design through its original drawbridge and prison features. Visitors can sense how these elements served both protection and control of the surrounding region.

The fortress now operates as a functioning hotel where visitors can stay and explore the premises. The location is clearly visible from the valley below and remains naturally accessible from the river side.

The castle served as a toll point in the Middle Ages to control navigation on the Rhône and generated substantial income for its lords. This trade function made it more than just a fortress - it was an economic hub of the area.

Cute little castle between the Rhône and the vineyards of Saint-Joseph. It hovers above the abyss and one almost fears that it will tip over!
