Château de Greifenstein

Château de Greifenstein is a castle ruin situated on a hilltop near Saverne in the Alsace region at approximately 440 meters elevation. The site offers views across the surrounding valley and the Northern Vosges, with the medieval walls and fortification remains still clearly visible from various vantage points.

The fortress was first documented in the 12th century and served to control trade routes passing through the region. Over the following centuries it suffered damage and was eventually abandoned, leading to its current ruined state.

The castle displays features of medieval military architecture from Alsatian craftsmen through its fortified walls and defensive towers. Visitors walking through the ruins can directly observe how these structures were built and understand the builder's methods.

The castle is accessible via a marked hiking trail starting from Saverne village, requiring approximately 45 minutes of walking. It is advisable to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring a flashlight to safely explore the darker areas within the ruins.

The stone walls display clear tool marks left by medieval stonemasons that become visible upon closer inspection. These marks reveal the craftsmanship and provide insight into the working methods of builders from that era.
