Château de Lordat, Medieval castle ruins in Lordat, France.

The stone fortress sits on a rocky outcrop at 965 meters elevation, featuring three remaining walls, gates, towers, and an ancient cistern.

Built in the 9th century and first documented in 970 AD, the castle served as a strategic stronghold for the Cathars during their resistance in 1244.

The fortress exemplifies medieval military architecture of the Ariège region and stands as a testament to the conflicts between Cathars and Catholics.

The castle remains open year-round from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with free access except during special events and organized activities.

The square entrance tower maintains its original form and provides views across the Ariège valley from its position atop the rocky promontory.
