Château de Theyrargues, Medieval castle in Rivières, France.

Château de Theyrargues is a medieval fortress in Rivières built where the Cèze and Auzon rivers converge. The structure displays crenellated towers and stone walls designed for defense, positioned to command views of the surrounding terrain.

The castle was built in the 15th century and later changed hands multiple times, first to the Budos family, then to the Ramel family, and finally to the Chaltiel family. These successive ownerships reflect the shifting fortunes of the region.

The castle shapes the village identity through its position where two rivers meet, marking the local landscape visibly. You can observe how residents relate to this stone structure as a defining feature of their commune.

The structure sits on a hill accessible from both river sides, with the best views of the main facades from the riverside approaches. Several vantage points in the surrounding area allow you to take in the entire building from different angles.

Rivières is home to three medieval fortifications in close proximity, making this small commune an unusual hub of defensive architecture. This cluster was strategically important for controlling river crossings.
