Château du Mont, Medieval castle in Sazeray, France

Château du Mont is a castle built on a plateau edge overlooking the Rio Brûlé valley, featuring a rectangular main building framed by rounded towers. The structure rises about 20 meters above the surrounding landscape and displays the clean lines of medieval architecture with later additions.

The castle's first written mention appears in 1385, when knight Guillaume des Ages held the title of lord. The main building was constructed in 1457, and a large barn was added in 1640, marking stages of development across two centuries.

The castle reflects how medieval and early modern nobility organized their lives, mixing residential comfort with defensive needs. The courtyard and outbuildings show how daily life revolved around family, farming, and protection.

The castle remains private property and can only be viewed from the exterior, with towers and structures visible from a distance. The best vantage point is from the plateau itself, where you can take in the full structure and its position above the valley.

The cellar beneath the main building was partially carved directly from the rock, showing how builders took advantage of the site's natural geology. The north tower contains original latrines that survive today, an uncommon find from the medieval period.
