Saint Pierre Cemetery, Historical cemetery in La Timone, Marseille, France.
Saint Pierre Cemetery is a burial ground in La Timone spanning a vast area and ranking among France's largest cemeteries. The site is organized through planned pathways and contains numerous grave sites along with sculptural monuments and artistic memorials.
The cemetery opened in 1863 as a replacement for the overcrowded Saint Charles Cemetery, which could no longer accommodate the expanding city's burial needs. This new facility marked a turning point in how Marseille managed its urban growth.
The mausoleum of Camille Olive blends Catholic and Islamic architectural styles, reflecting how Marseille in the 1800s welcomed people from different faiths. This mix of designs shows the diverse population that shaped the city's character.
The site is divided into different sections connected by clear pathways that make navigation straightforward. Wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time to walk through the various areas and view the different memorials throughout the grounds.
Sculptor André-Joseph Allar created several notable works here, including pieces like L'homme à la harpe and Une pleureuse that stand among the graves. These artistic creations show the high craftsmanship that defined Marseille during this period.
