Cimetière des Oubliés

Cimetière des Oubliés is a cemetery in Cadillac-sur-Garonne with approximately 900 graves marked by iron crosses, though most identification plates have been lost over time. The cemetery is surrounded by walls bearing nearly 3400 carved names that honor those buried in this ground.

The cemetery was established in 1920 to bury patients from the nearby psychiatric hospital and World War I soldiers with head injuries. It later became a burial ground for soldiers from several European countries, transforming it into a place of international remembrance.

The cemetery holds the memory of people buried here without family, including psychiatric patients and soldiers from different countries. Visitors can read names on the cemetery walls and understand how this place preserves the dignity of those often overlooked.

The cemetery is easily accessible on foot during weekdays and can be visited without major obstacles. Wearing shoes with good grip is advisable since the paths can be uneven.

The former gravedigger's house still stands on the grounds and now serves as an interpretation center sharing personal stories of those buried here. This building offers a rare glimpse into the daily work of those who cared for these forgotten people.
