Château de Barante

Château de Barante is a château in Dorat featuring a neo-Romanesque chapel set within extensive grounds that span about 100 hectares. The property offers views toward the Puys mountain range.

The building was constructed in the 17th century after the Brugière de Barante family acquired the land in 1627. It was rebuilt in 1843 following a fire.

The château served as a meeting place for French intellectuals and thinkers who visited to engage with the owner. These connections shaped its reputation as a hub of intellectual exchange in the region.

The château is not open to the public, as it closed after 1914 due to thefts. Visitors can see the building from outside and explore the grounds, but entry inside is not available.

The château's library contained around 60,000 volumes, including the first edition of Blaise Pascal's Provinciales. This substantial collection reflects the intellectual importance the place held.
