Château de la Chezotte

Château de la Chezotte is a fortified residence in Ahun built with two round towers, one square tower, and a fortified bridge at its entrance. The structure shows typical medieval defensive elements including machicolations mounted on corbels and thick stone walls.

The castle was built in the 15th century under the direction of Jacques de La Ville, a treasurer of the La Marche region. Its location and design followed medieval practice of placing residential fortifications on elevated ground with water access.

The rooms reveal how nobility lived and worked during medieval times, with fireplaces and furnishings that tell stories of their daily routines. Walking through, visitors notice which spaces were for receiving guests and which were more private.

Comfortable shoes are recommended as the interior spaces connect via stairs and exploring requires moving between several levels. Clear, dry conditions are ideal for viewing the details of rooms and towers throughout the structure.

The moat still receives water from the Félinas stream, creating a natural water barrier around the building that remains functional. The surrounding grounds arranged in English-style landscaping reveal how the estate evolved beyond its purely defensive role.
