Cirque du Bout du Monde, Natural cirque in Vauchignon, France.
The Cirque du Bout du Monde is a valley enclosed by steep limestone cliffs in Burgundy, where a waterfall drops about 40 meters. The natural area spans hundreds of hectares and contains marked hiking trails that let visitors explore different levels and viewpoints within the canyon.
The valley was carved over thousands of years by the Cozanne River flowing through ancient limestone deposits, creating its current shape. This geological work also formed several underground cavities hidden within the limestone walls.
The location sits within vineyard-covered hills that merge natural features with the region's wine culture. The steep limestone walls frame the surrounding landscape in a way that visitors recognize as typical Burgundy scenery.
The site is reached via the D906 road toward Vauchignon, then the smaller D111f road leads to the entrance area. The trails can become slippery in wet weather, so proper footwear is important, especially on steeper sections.
The gorge is home to the only breeding site in Burgundy for white-bellied swifts, fast-moving birds that nest in the cliff faces. Peregrine falcons also hunt and roost here, making the canyon a crucial refuge for these raptors.
