Ibardin, Mountain pass at French-Spanish border in Pyrenees, France and Spain
Ibardin is a mountain pass at 317 meters elevation connecting the French town of Urrugne with the Spanish municipality of Bera through winding roads. The location sits where two countries meet, with roads and hiking trails crossing daily.
The first commercial shop, known as a venta, opened in 1956 selling food, spirits, tobacco, and leather goods at the border. This founding marked the start of commerce at the pass.
The pass features tax-free shops selling regional products like Jamón Serrano, wine, and traditional Basque goods to visitors crossing the border. These stores have shaped daily life at this location for generations.
The pass is accessible by car via the D 404 road or on foot using the GR 10 hiking trail, with two parking areas for different vehicle sizes. Bring a jacket since it is windier and cooler at the top than in the valleys below.
Ibardin Aventures opened a leisure park at the pass in 2013 with adventure playgrounds and outdoor activities. This addition transformed the location into more than just a shopping destination.
