Col de Balme, Mountain pass between Trient and Argentière, France and Switzerland.

Col de Balme is a mountain pass at roughly 2200 meters elevation that connects the Valais canton in Switzerland with the Haute-Savoie region in France through hiking trails. The site sits between Chamonix and Trient and serves as an important link between the two countries.

For centuries this pass served as a traditional crossing between the Swiss and French Alps and was used by traders and herders moving between regions. This long history of movement made it a natural meeting point where the two countries came together.

The pass forms a meeting point on the Tour du Mont Blanc where hikers from many countries share the trail and camp together during their multi-day journey. The mix of languages and nationalities gives the place a truly international character.

From Chamonix visitors can use the cable car and chairlift to save time on the uphill walk and reach the pass more quickly. It is wise to go during warmer months and bring good hiking boots and rain gear since weather at the top can change rapidly.

On clear days visitors can see both the Bernese Oberland peaks to the north and Mont Blanc to the south in a single wide view. This rare sight makes the location a special place where two of Europe's greatest mountain ranges seem to meet.
