Epomanduodurum, Archaeological site in Mandeure, France
Epomanduodurum was a large Roman town in the Doubs valley that spread across hundreds of hectares and contained numerous buildings such as temples, public structures, and workshops. The site lies in a bend of the river, where archaeological remains of different areas of this ancient settlement are visible.
The town began as an Iron Age settlement and grew into the most important center of the region under Roman rule. It became economically powerful and ranked second only to Besançon in the area.
The ancient town had craft districts where potters and metalworkers made and sold their goods. These areas show how people worked and lived together.
The site is spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and plan time for a walk around the grounds. Most structures are underground, so good planning helps you see the main areas.
A sacred area spanning about 10 hectares was enclosed by walls and monumental gateways, where multiple temples stood side by side. This reserved space shows how important religion and worship were to the people living there.
