Fort de Chaudanne, Military fortification in Velotte district, Besançon, France.
Fort de Chaudanne is a military fortification with a pentagonal layout located in Besançon. It features a drawbridge, guardhouse, and residential quarters that originally accommodated a garrison of approximately 100 soldiers.
The fort served a strategic purpose during the 1674 Siege of Besançon. It remained militarily significant through to the Liberation of Besançon in 1944.
The fort has housed the Théâtre Alcyon since 1995, which regularly hosts theater, dance, and music performances. This artistic use has transformed it into a cultural venue where the community gathers for creative events.
The fort is accessible by hiking trail starting from the Mazagran Bridge parking area. The path climbs steadily uphill and requires a moderate level of physical fitness to reach the site.
Three historical sundials carved in 1844 remain on the interior walls of the fortress. These time-marking devices offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship and daily routines of the garrison era.
