Tour Notre-Dame

Tour Notre-Dame is a circular tower positioned on Bastion Bregille, overlooking the river bends of the Doubs below. The structure forms part of the defensive network that once guarded the eastern approach to the city.

The tower was built in 1560 and later transformed during the 17th century by military engineer Vauban, who modernized Besançon's entire fortification network. This redesign made it a key element in France's defensive strategy.

The tower received official recognition as a French historical monument in October 1942, marking its importance in the national architectural heritage.

The tower is not open to the public, but you can see its outer walls from the surrounding fortification area. The site is easy to access and offers views across the old town and river valley.

The name comes from a former priory called Jussan-Moutier, whose buildings were transferred to the Minimes religious order. This surprising link between military architecture and monastic history gives the site an unexpected dimension.
