Tour Notre-Dame, Military tower in Besançon, France
The Tour Notre-Dame rises as a circular fortification structure on the hillside of Bastion Bregille, overlooking the bends of the Doubs river.
The tower, constructed in 1560, underwent significant modifications during the 17th century when military architect Vauban enhanced the fortification system of Besançon.
The tower received official recognition as a French historical monument in October 1942, marking its importance in the national architectural heritage.
The structure remains sealed off from public access, but visitors can observe its external features while exploring the surrounding fortification system.
The tower earned its name from the former Jussan-Moutier priory, whose buildings were later assigned to the Minimes religious order in 1607.
