Fort de Corbas, fort in Frankrijk
Fort de Corbas is a military fortification in the French town of Corbas, built between 1878 and 1880. The structure features thick walls, a rotating Mougin turret with two cannons, and underground tunnels designed to defend against attackers.
The fort was built as part of the Séré de Rivières system, a network of fortifications designed to defend the Lyon region in the late 19th century. It was officially abandoned in 1998 and is now used by the French Ministry of the Interior as storage.
The fort's name comes from the nearby town of Corbas, which the structure takes its identity from. The building shapes the local landscape today and serves as a reminder of the region's defensive heritage to those who live nearby.
The fort is not open for regular visits and can only be viewed from the outside. The surrounding parkland and walking trails allow visitors to explore the structure and its historical context from various vantage points.
The fort is the only installation in this region with a rotating Mougin turret, a gun tower from 1876 that could mount two large cannons. This innovative weapons technology was remarkably advanced for the time of its construction.
