Fort du Randouillet

Fort du Randouillet is a mountain fortress above Briançon that spreads across multiple levels adapted to the steep terrain. The complex contains several barracks and water storage systems designed to support long-term military occupation.

The fortress was built between 1724 and 1734 following military engineer Vauban's defensive strategy. It was designed to protect the Fort des Têtes from attacks coming from higher elevations.

The fort displays stone pillars at its entrance that reflect the power of French monarchy. These architectural details show how important this place was as a symbol of state authority.

The site sits high in the mountains above town, so wear sturdy shoes and be ready for changing weather conditions. Paths are steep and rough in places, so expect uneven ground throughout your visit.

Soldiers stationed here during the 1930s and 1940s painted murals inside the quarters that survive today. These artworks reveal how troops expressed creativity while living in such a remote location.
