Fort du Randouillet, Military fortress on Alpine heights in Briançon, France
Fort du Randouillet extends across 250 meters of frontage and 350 meters in depth, featuring multiple levels adapted to mountain terrain specifications.
The fortress construction lasted from 1724 to 1734, following military engineer Vauban's defensive strategy to protect Fort des Têtes from elevated attacks.
The fort displays architectural elements such as two stone pilasters at the entrance drawbridge, representing the power of French monarchy in the 18th century.
The fortress contains three parallel barracks and multiple water cisterns with a total capacity of 1,062 cubic meters to support extended military operations.
Soldiers stationed at the fort in the 1930s and 1940s created wall paintings inside the quarters, which remain visible to this day.
