Pont d'Asfeld, Stone bridge at Vauban Fortifications in Briançon, France.

Pont d'Asfeld is a stone bridge spanning the Durance River in Briançon with a single large arch that dominates the rocky gorge below. The structure connects the town directly to the fortress network on the opposite side, serving as both a practical crossing and a key part of the fortified landscape.

Construction took place from 1729 to 1731 as an improvement over an earlier wooden crossing used for military purposes. The project formed part of a larger fortification development in the region during the early 18th century.

The bridge features a central iron cross with a stone pyramid and a bronze plaque marking 1734, commemorating Claude-François Bidal's promotion to Marshal of France.

The bridge is easily accessible from the old town and provides a safe crossing over the gorge for all visitors. From here you can access the fortifications on the opposite side and enjoy views down the valley.

The construction employed an innovative wooden scaffold system to position the curved stones during assembly, a clever solution for working over a deep gorge. This engineering method from the 1700s demonstrates how builders solved complex structural challenges in difficult terrain.
