Incredible Edible, Community food initiative in Todmorden, United Kingdom.
Incredible Edible is a community gardening network in France that turns public spaces into open vegetable gardens where anyone can pick fresh produce. The beds are planted in squares, along streets, and near public buildings, making food growing part of everyday life in the neighborhood.
The movement began in 2008 in Todmorden, a small town in Yorkshire, England, when Pamela Warhurst and Mary Clear started planting vegetables in unused public spaces. The idea spread to other countries, including France, where local groups adopted the model and set up their own projects.
The organization brings together local schools and community members who tend the gardens as shared work, building connections through harvests and daily care. These spaces become natural gathering points where neighbors meet and work side by side.
The gardens are open to everyone and no booking is needed to visit or take part. The best time to come is during the warmer months, when the plants are at their most productive and group activities tend to happen more often.
The signs placed next to the beds in the original Todmorden gardens simply read "take what you need" with no further instructions. That short phrase became the calling card of the whole movement and can now be found in gardens across many countries.
